We caught word this weekend that Urban Outfitters is again looking to open a store on Bardstown Road, but Insider Louisville beat us to the break. While a previous deal fell through a couple years ago for space at a still-empty strip mall at Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive and apparently totally ignoring the old ear X-tacy space, the hip clothing company is now looking for space currently occupied by Blockbuster Video at 1140 Bardstown Road—next door to Highland Coffee (how hip can one block get?).

We couldn’t confirm the fate of the Blockbuster, but the company was recently bought by Dish Network after filing for bankruptcy last year, so it seems like the space could be in limbo. Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters also owns several other store concepts including Anthropologie.

  1. how about a shop that sells goods made by people and designers in the area, and not cheap POS clothing that is made to fall apart so you spend all your time and money in there…

  2. Agreed, I would like this to be only a rumor. I count it as a plus that Louisville has not attracted retailers like Urban Outfitters. I tell myself it is because they suck money out of the community while contributing very little but that must not be entirely true as I was insanely excited when I heard Trader Joe’s was finally opening a store. My dislike in this case may be more linked to what I perceive to be aesthetically displeasing clothes and a prepackaged supposed edginess/subversiveness a giant corporation can only market rather than possess.

IMHO, you cannot argue with anything that brings more people to Bardstown Road (or Frankfort Ave, or Market St., etc…). Yeah, it may be corporate, but at least it’s not going into Mall St. Matthews.

If you don’t like the store, then don’t shop there. But at least support their desire to invest in the city.

  5. Am I the only one that likes urban outfitters? their clothes are so cheap (for men) and they actually fit skinny people. plus most of what is for sale on Bardstown road is kind of expensive.
