The parking garage under construction on the corner of Clay Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard in the Medical Center has begun to show it’s two-tone brick facade. Dark grey bricks have been set at the structures base along Madison Street and lighter red bricks span the upper floors. The lines and massing of the garage reflect those of the Clinical and Translational Research Building under construction next door. When complete, the garage will contain 1,700 parking spots on nine levels. The best feature of the building, however, is the sidewalk retail space on Muhammad Ali Blvd. Two new shops have been planned to face Liberty Green. No word yet on what might take the spaces, but the University of Louisville plans to seek proposals for the space soon.
The mega-garage under construction on the corner of Clay Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd just keeps getting taller and taller. Okay, so its gained one floor since we checked in last month, but the floor plates on this thing are so big, it takes a while to get an entire floor poured. The site is divided up into segments with crews working each one semi-independently and various parts of the structure are under different levels of progress.
The 9-story garage will hold 1,700 cars when its done and will include retail on its ground level. It also will define the northern edge of a future pedestrian mall on Madison Street that will ultimately stretch from the Phoenix Place Apartments all the way to Abraham Flexner Way to the west. Along with exposed concrete, the structure will consist of red and black bricks (it’s being built by U of L, remember?) with massing that will help reduce the scale of the building from street level.
Disaster was nearly averted recently as a concrete beam was mistakenly poured too low to allow walking clearance at one of the main entrances, but crews were able to cut away a non-essential portion of the beam to fix the problem. It’s good to see yet another surface parking lot disappear, even though it will still mostly be occupied by cars. The street retail should enhance both the Medical Center and the surrounding neighborhoods.
It’s been a while since we checked in with that huge parking garage going up on the corner of Clay Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd. The structure is now fully three-dimensional; that is to say it’s climbing its way up to the third level now. Besides being gargantuan at 9 stories with room for 1700 cars, the mega-garage is set to have one or two retail outlets facing Muhammad Ali. We understand negotiations are ongoing to fill the retail space. The garage rendering supposes anything from coffee, to books, to a copy shop.
When we went out last week to visit the Bio-Medical Research Building under construction on Hancock Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd., we snapped a few photos of the parking garage being built next-door. Last time we checked in on the mega-garage, the tower crane was in place and the foundation was being poured. Now, much more concrete is in place, columns are reaching for the third level, and a giant ramp is being prepared.
The tower crane for the Med Center Mega Garage under construction at the corner of Clay Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd. has been assembled and while it may not tower as high as other notable cranes (hey, the garage is only nine floors), the boom arm of the crane is a monster. The reason, of course, is that this is a mega-garage…and its site is really quite large. Yes, 1,700 cars will fill the concrete monster when it is finished in just about 16 months. The garage fills up what once was a vast surface level parking lot and has some ground level retail space, so as far as parking garages go this one will be pretty nice.
Also pictured, the foundation work is well under way on the project. Seen above, dozens of auger-cast piles are beginning to dot the site to make way for some visible super-structure in coming weeks.
The tower crane for the Bio-Med 3 Mega-Garage arrived via flatbed trailer today. Look for photos of the completed crane in a few days.
It’s official. The University of Louisville Health Sciences Center Mega-Garage is now under construction at the corner of Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Clay Street. The site, formerly a surface level parking lot, has been cleared and excavation has begun. The mega-garage is slated to have 9 floors with 1700 parking spaces and will cost $26 million. Plans for the garage call for a brick and concrete facade to relate to the under construction bio-medical research facility next door and to soften the appearance for the new Liberty Green housing across Muhammad Ali. The mega-garage will provide retail space at sidewalk level along Muhammad Ali for a cafe or coffee shop, providing some street activity much needed in the area. Construction is long overdue as funding approval from the state has been slow. The mega-garage was designed by JRA Architects of Louisville and scheduled for completion around Novermber 2009.
