Arena Mayhem: Here Comes Yet Another Tower Crane

Fourth tower crane imminent at arena site

Fourth tower crane imminent at arena site

Okay, how many tower cranes can you fit on a single block?  Seriously, the count has now reached four.  Crews began installing the base of the new crane located roughly in the center of the site.  Three tower cranes was dramatic, but this could be too much to handle.  We thought the triangular configuration of the first three cranes was it, but we love to be proven wrong like this.  Oh, there are also several photos of the actual arena construction just ahead as well.

Arena Mayhem: Walling Off Third Street

Concrete wall on Third Street

Concrete wall on Third Street

Work continues at the arena site with a giant concrete wall rising on the corner of Third Street and River Road.  Sure, there’s already been tons of concrete poured all over the construction site, but this one is right up on the street and begins to show what kind of mass and profile the future building will take.  Imagine this wall, but about 80 feet taller and you can see that this long-empty corner will be much more urban once the arena takes shape.  More tower crane parts arrived by truck today, so hopefully soon, the two crane-stumps will climb high into the sky.

Arena Mayhem: Make That Three Blue Tower Cranes

Third tower crane at the arena site

Third tower crane at the arena site

Okay, so the overtime work we told you about yesterday evidently went toward installing the base of a third tower crane at the northwest corner of the arena site.  Our prediction of matching blue cranes proved true, but at least there will be three cranes to watch and photograph.  There nothing like multiple overlapping tower cranes to feel like theres real progress being made.  We believe now that the rumored 4th crane will not materialize.  The placement of the three cranes in a triangular arrangement leaves little room for another crane.  Once fully set up, these cranes will bring the new total tower crane count to 6 in and around downtown.

Arena Mayem: Second Tower Crane Rising, Guess What Color?

Second tower crane it, you guessed it, blue.

Second tower crane it, you guessed it, blue.

A second tower crane on the north-east corner of the construction site has been spotted sitting among a forest of concrete columns.  Only the first segment of the crane has been placed, so we really can’t call it towering… yet, but with all the controvery surrounding the first crane’s strange color for a Cardinal shrine, we’re surprised to see yet another blue crane about to rise over the site.  There will be another crane installed eventually (and some say possibly even two more), so we’ll see if they catch on.  Our bet: they’re all going to be blue cranes.

Work continues on the site well past sunset and even on the weekends, so it looks like they are serious about getting this thing built in time for Halloween 2010.  Photos this time were brought to you by Ice Storm 2009.  With the power situation still looking gloomy back home, new, albeit temporary, downtown digs feature a great view of the construction site.  Check out many more photos after the click.

Arena Mayhem: Big Blue Towering Over House Of Red

Big blue tower crane at the arena site

Big blue tower crane at the arena site

The construction of the new arena for the University of Louisville inadvertent (we think) got political today as crews installed a new tower crane in the giant crater we call the arena site.  The problem you might ask?  Seeing a new tower crane is awesome, but this one is blue and white.  We wonder how die-hard Cards fans feel about a Big Blue crane building their new shrine?  Over at the University’s new parking garage on Muhammad Ali Blvd., they got the crane’s color right: red.  With the fierce drama surrounding the state’s biggest rivalry, every detail matters.

Tower Crane Arrives at Jefferson Street Parking Garage Site

Jefferson Street Tower Crane

Jefferson Street Tower Crane

A tower crane is now fully set up on Jefferson Street at the site of a new 6-story, 433 space garage between First and Second Streets.  Construction of the garage’s foundation began last August.  Half of the spaces will be used for the adjacent 222 Building and the ground level will include 1,000 square feet of retail space.

This brings the total number of tower cranes in downtown or immediately adjacent to four.  The other projects include the ZirMed Gateway Towers, JCTC Allied Health Building, and the Medical Center Mega-Garage.

JCTC Allied Health Building: Tower Crane Edition

JCTC Allied Health Construction

JCTC Allied Health Construction

Downtown’s newest tower crane was installed over the last weekend on the campus of Jefferson Community & Technical College on Second Street to help speed along construction of their new Allied Health Building.  The new $25.6 million 4-story building has begun to rise out of the ground over the last few months as concrete columns project from the first floor.  Around the corner, in a tight space that was once the seldom used terraced courtyard, crews have been installing formwork in preparation for a concrete pour next week that will enclose the basement.  Once the concrete has set on the ground level, expect to see evidence of progress quicken as the second level takes shape.  The character of the street changes dramatically as a void is filled in and the urban edge of the city is defined.  This new buildingwill be clad predominantly in metal panels, brick, and glass and features a prominent stair tower along Second Street as well as a defined cornice line.  The structure was designed by Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan, Inc. of Louisville.

Med Center Garage Crane Towering, Foundation Boring

Med Center Garage Tower Crane

The tower crane for the Med Center Mega Garage under construction at the corner of Clay Street and Muhammad Ali Blvd.  has been assembled and while it may not tower as high as other notable cranes (hey, the garage is only nine floors), the boom arm of the crane is a monster.  The reason, of course, is that this is a mega-garage…and its site is really quite large.  Yes, 1,700 cars will fill the concrete monster when it is finished in just about 16 months.  The garage fills up what once was a vast surface level parking lot and has some ground level retail space, so as far as parking garages go this one will be pretty nice.

Also pictured, the foundation work is well under way on the project.  Seen above, dozens of auger-cast piles are beginning to dot the site to make way for some visible super-structure in coming weeks.
