The Ryder Cup Gala Mega-Tent we’ve been telling you about over the past two weeks will go into action tonight with international guests, famous golfers, local celebrities, and country music stars dining on cuisine by renowned chefs and dancing on a shiny black dance-floor. The tables are set, the bars are stocked, and the red carpet is being rolled out for 1,200 or so glamorous Ryder Cup fans who paid a pretty penny (up to 85,000 of them) to mingle in the most glamorous party in Louisville outside Derby.
We have been covering the progress of the biggest tent ever since a gigantic crane first landed on 6th Street to deliver dozens of mechanical units and wooden and metal beams. We were there when torrential downpours left bathtub size water bubbles in the roof and we saw when Hurricane Ike didn’t approve of an auxiliary tent holding supplies.
The mega-tent persevered despite the wind throwing aluminum spears through its roof (literally). Its final test comes tonight when the European golf team and the American golf team try to dance on the same dance-floor listening to CMA-nominated Carrie Underwood. Downpours and windstorms: no problem; international golf rivalry: who knows what will happen!
