What a difference a month can make. The new $5 million Arts & Athletics Complex under construction on the corner of Fourth Street and Breckinridge Street has progressed from a foundation to four walls awaiting a roof. The building is being built by Presentation Academy and replaces the old art-deco 900 Building previously on the site. The new structure has been designed to blend with the original Presentation building and fit nicely into the historic neighborhood.
The building has risen very quickly due to its “tilt-up” construction. Prefabricated concrete panels were poured on the ground, providing an easier and more cost-effective construction method, and lifted into vertical position. You can see the steel braces holding them up in the photo until the entire structure is tied together. The exterior will be clad in brick and stone, so you won’t ever notice the construction method when the building is all done. Good to see building mass anchoring this SoBro corner.
