Plans for the new Harvest restaurant on the corner of Barret and Christy avenues were announced over the summer and business partners Ivor Chadkowski and Paul Kuhl planned to have their new restaurant open by spring. The restaurant, which will specialize in serving locally grown food, is still on track, but we may not see the restaurant before the middle or end of next year.

The team decided they wouldn’t stop work on the project, just set a pace that will keep up with the struggling economy. Bids are being taken for interior demolition and construction work, and demolition is already under way in the back of the building for parking space. Kuhl and his brothers own both the yellow wooden building, formerly the Highland Fruit Market, and the adjacent one-story masonry addition next door.

Chadkowski and Kuhl plan on turning the property into a mixed-use space with the Harvest restaurant occupying about 5,000 square feet in the one-story building. About 1,500 square feet of ground floor retail space in the yellow building will be leased to a tenant that can harmonize with the restaurant’s emphasis on local food and the second floor will be converted into apartments.

Harvest will potentially seat 60 to 100 people and the renovation for the restaurant alone could top $500,000. Chadkowski and Kuhl are tentatively hoping for a June opening, but admit anything is possible with the current state of the economy.

  1. Anyone know what happened to Homer and the sheet metal equipment? We looked at that building last year but it was just too expensive.

  2. Homer retired and has gotten remarried and is doing well. I believe most of the equipment has been sold at auction. He is listed in the phone book.
