Spotted: Fancy Recycling & Waste Bins on Fourth Street

Solar-powered compacting trash & recycle bins on Fourth Street. (Broken Sidewalk)
Happily spotted these fancy trash and recycling bins on Fourth and Liberty streets in early May, and as far as I am aware, are the city’s first official sidewalk recycling option. Besides recycling, the trash can features a solar-powered trash compactor. The same bins are frequently seen in Manhattan’s busy parks as they won’t overflow like a conventional trash can or require emptying as often. Anyone have more details about these bins or know why they suddenly showed up?
[ UPDATE! 9:45 a.m.] Louisville Downtown Management District informed us via Facebook that these bins are a Waste Management pilot program and the LDMD is currently exploring funding options to bring them to other parts of downtown. ]

I hope this project spreads across downtown and they find a way to make funding sustainable. Other places to put these could be around Papa John’s Cardinal stadium, the Yum center, and U of L campus.

I would like to see these at busy bus stops. I am so tired of seeing overflowing trash cans at bus stops!

A group of us Mechanical Engineering students are trying to design one of these as a club project. I think it might be out of our reach financially because of the solar panel
