Since 2013, the Louisville Water Company has worked to restore the Crescent Hill Gatehouse. The limestone building, built in 1879 and designed by Charles Hermany, is an emulation of a Gothic German castle. It received a new slate roof and had its terra cotta ceiling, iron bannisters, and limestone steps restored. A false ceiling was also removed to give visitors a full view of the original terra cotta. Excluding some work done after the 1974 tornado, this is the first major renovation of the building since its opening. Louisville’s JRA Architects handled the design work and Corbett Construction served as the contractor.
The Louisville Water Company invites you to see the $2.5 million renovation tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13 from 5:30–8:00p.m., an occasion that also marks the return of “Walking Wednesdays.” So celebrate Louisville’s rich architectural tradition by—as would have been custom in 1879—walking or penny-farthing to Reservoir Avenue tomorrow evening.
