The Calistoga Bakery Cafe, the latest endeavor of pizza mogul John Schnatter, has officially been open for a couple of weeks now in the Medical Center on the corner of Chestnut Street and Preston Street. We last checked in with the project when it was under construction, but now the dust has settled and construction equipment made way for flat screen televisions. And we mean a lot of them. There’s one above a stone fireplace surrounded by plush brown leather chairs and another in the main dining area and several more displaying the menu behind the main counter. The place is upscale for a bread/lunch shop, from its decor to its salads and sandwiches.
This is the second Calistoga Cafe in town; the other is located in DuPont Circle off Dutchman’s Lane. (Is it us or are these outlets following the hospitals around?) We are glad to see this Medical Center location open and holding a steady business. After all, there aren’t that many dining choices in the Med-Cen (this is healthier than the McDonald’s in the Children’s Hospital) and it fills in a retail space in a building that had never planned to offer street retail.
The U of L Outpatient Center opened up its glassy south facade to allow street seating in warmer weather (there’s a few tables in the building’s massive lobby, too) and in doing so made the hospital district a more rounded and pedestrian friendly area.
The restaurant is open 6:00a to 6:00p during the week and 7:00a til’ 2:00p on Saturday. You can download the menu here (Warning: PDF).
