Spalding University in the SoBro neighborhood opened a new classroom building this school year housing their College of Health & Natural Sciences. The new state-of-the-art 45,000 square foot, two-story facility is on the corner of Breckinridge Street and 3rd Street. The property is actually a renovation of a quite old building that had fallen into disrepair and cast a dark glare onto the sidewalk.
The renovation restored the red brick and stone facade, replaced windows, added new metal panels, and created an art-deco inspired front entrance. The inside looks like a fairly standard academic classroom building with muted colors all around. The parapet at the top of the structure at one time featured small stone decorations similar to surrounding buildings but were not replaced in the renovation. Interruptions in the limestone parapet cap reveal where these decorations occurred.
