Last week, the Church at 801 East Main Street planted a new sign advertising office space in the former sanctuary of the Marcus Lindsey Memorial Church. The new sign goes a little further than the previous sign with its caption, “The previous owners let it go to hell,” but that’s all part of the charm of the building that invites you to “be part of a secular plot.”
After wooden bars blocked part of the sign, co-owner Pip Pullen, who developed the project with Susan Swope, said, “I’m starting to think the Christian gentleman who installed our sign had the last laugh.” Everything is back to normal now.

Nice sign, that only my man Pip can get away with!
I’m now reminded of the old joke: “The trouble with crucifixion as a form of suicide is getting the last nail in.”
Why does the city (or whoever may be responsible) seem to be in the habit of lopping of church steeples?
Ours apparently got hit by lightning, so this can only be pinned on God, not government.
@Porter Stevens –
I see. Thank you very much for clarifying.
I attended Marcus Lindsey from 1945 until 1959. It was a wonderful Church, and I might add, a beautiful one.
I have life long friends that I am still in touch with from my years at Marcus Lindsey.
All of the posted pictures have brought back such fond memories of a wonderful place. Urban flight contributeded to the demise of “OUR” Church., including my on flight to the suburbs. As I recall there was not enough money ever raised to replace our steeple. I remember when it was removed. what a sad time. I would love to be able to tour the Church again, if allowed, I would be so grateful!
Thank you for this opportunity to write you. Me and my friend Dan House have remained life long friends. we are both 71 now, and attended his grandmothers pre school sunday school class. (we were 5.) Dan live in Cheyyane Wyoming. I have a real good prosumer camera. would love to take pictures to send to my friend Dan, and have copies for me.
Thanks again
