Just another day in the Highlands, perhaps. Over the weekend, hundreds of Facebook-connected Louisvillians set on keeping the city weird spilled off the sidewalks, momentarily taking over the intersection of Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway. The “Movin’ Like Bernie” flash mob happened on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (Check out lots of photos of the mob at Spry Media.)
According to WFPL:
The Facebook-organized flash mob ultimately saw several hundred people gather along the sidewalks to watch participants tilt their heads back and flop their arms around, mimicking a dance scene in the movie Weekend at Bernie’s 2.
…
The mob remained relatively subdued even with a few crowd surfers. After the song ended, police began ushering people off the street and the crowd began to disperse.
What’s really interesting to see here is so many people rethinking the use of public space, even if only for a moment and, for the most part, unconsciously. It’s nice to see so many people enjoying public space and finding creative ways of using it. That’s a good thing for the city, if you ask me.
Hat tip to WFPL and Lou Courant and Spry Media for covering the mob.
Really dumb trend. Get a life, maybe help others. This is just narcissism.
When flash mobs first started they were usually highly choreographed events of some sophistication … dance or song or politically inspired. Now that it has become a trend that has filtered down to all, the lowest common denominator is “flash mobbing” and you get… well … ‘movin’ like bernie’.
I think putting a smile on people’s faces is worth something. Anything that makes a day unusual is worth doing. Helps ensure that you actually live a moment of your life out. The hundreds who did this still know how to have fun. Thank God.
@Brian – umadbro?
Bunch of whiners, its funny, get over it, so what if they weren’t perfectly choreographed.
