Another awesome way to save water? Take a 5 minute shower instead of a 15 minute one and save 20 gallons. Take a “Navy Shower” (only run the water to get wet and to rinse off), and it looks like you could get it down to 5-8 gallons, depending on your shower head (http://www.allianceforwaterefficiency.org/Residential_Shower_Introduction.aspx)
Also? Stop driving a car. Extracting and refining a gallon of gasoline can use as much as 5.5 gallons of water, depending on its source (http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/AF/557.pdf). Stop driving your hybrid, too: it uses more water than a conventional car (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es800367m). Whatever you do, don’t buy a new car. You’d have to *not* flush your toilet close to 20,000 times to make up for the water used in manufacturing a vehicle (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/06/how-many-gallons-of-water.php).
The best thing about cutting back on driving and taking shorter showers? You don’t have to smell someone else’s stank, asparagus-scented pee every time you go to the bathroom.
