Ice Storm 2009: A Tour In Photos: Part V

Ice coated trees

Here’s our last installment of photos from last week’s ice storm. This time we’re rounding out the set with icy details and close-ups and the damage sustained by trees. Unfortunately, the storm has revealed the weakness of the beautiful Lacebark Elm trees that line West Main Street: they apparently can’t hold a lot of weight. We estimate the majority of trees on West Main sustained some damage, and quite a few were considerably destroyed.

Broken Sidewalk reader Alan wrote in to share some of his Ice Storm 2009 photos as well, check out the wintry scenes on Flickr here and here and here and here.

Arena Mayhem: Make That Three Blue Tower Cranes

Third tower crane at the arena site

Okay, so the overtime work we told you about yesterday evidently went toward installing the base of a third tower crane at the northwest corner of the arena site. Our prediction of matching blue cranes proved true, but at least there will be three cranes to watch and photograph. There nothing like multiple overlapping tower cranes to feel like theres real progress being made.

We believe now that the rumored 4th crane will not materialize. The placement of the three cranes in a triangular arrangement leaves little room for another crane. Once fully set up, these cranes will bring the new total tower crane count to 6 in and around downtown.

Until now, we’ve only gone with daytime ice photos. But the night offers sparkling crystal scenes so surreal under the haze of clouds and city lights that the cold and quiet night seems to stand still.

Statues. Louisville has a pretty decent collection of statues scattered throughout the city. Here are a few we saw last week dripping with ice.

Snapshot: JCTC Allied Health Building Close To Topping Out

Work continues at the new Allied Health building under construction on Second Street at the main campus of the Jefferson Community & Technical College. The fourth floor slab was supposed to be poured last week, but Ice Storm 2009 delays pushed the concrete pour to next week.

The next steps include pouring the next set of columns and a roof and, voila, we’ll have another topped-out building (but that means we’ll also lose a tower crane).

The 6-story parking structure under construction on Jefferson Street between First and Second Streets is playing catch-up after the Ice Storm 2009 delayed work last week. Crews were on hand today pouring the third floor of the concrete structure, which is almost halfway done.

The finished $6.5 million building will contain 1,000 square feet of retail space under 433 parking spots and will give a height-boost to the area immediately east of Second Street predominated by low, one-story buildings. A portion of the garage will be clad in brick while two flanking stair towers will be encased in glass.

      Cherokee Road towards Castleman Monument

The Highlands is always one of the worst hit areas in any storm. The destruction was widespread here, as always, but the massive grandeur of the trees and streets mostly free of cars in the Cherokee Triangle created another scene of winter beauty.

Several other groups have put together galleries of their own. While our list is by no means comprehensive, here are a few we found: Michelle of Consuming Louisville‘s Icepocalypse 2009 gallery, the LEO‘s Great Louisville Iceage gallery, the Ville-Voice’s Ice Tsunami photos, Our History NA’s New Albany photos, and a pretty pickle’s Ice Ice Baby gallery. We will be putting several more galleries online, too, so stay tuned.

      Waterfront Park

The icy devastation that descended on Louisville in the past week was, in the end, actually quite beautiful. Broken trees held in suspended animation and architecture coated in a sort of glazed icing were common sights around the city. We’ve compiled several sets of photos detailing different aspects of the storm. Here’s the first gallery depicting sights in and around downtown during the storm.

Arena Mayem: Second Tower Crane Rising, Guess What Color?

Second tower crane it, you guessed it, blue.

A second tower crane on the north-east corner of the construction site has been spotted sitting among a forest of concrete columns. Only the first segment of the crane has been placed, so we really can’t call it towering… yet, but with all the controversy surrounding the first crane’s strange color for a Cardinal shrine, we’re surprised to see yet another blue crane about to rise over the site. There will be another crane installed eventually (and some say possibly even two more), so we’ll see if they catch on. Our bet: they’re all going to be blue cranes.

Work continues on the site well past sunset and even on the weekends, so it looks like they are serious about getting this thing built in time for Halloween 2010. Photos this time were brought to you by Ice Storm 2009. With the power situation still looking gloomy back home, new, albeit temporary, downtown digs feature a great view of the construction site. Check out many more photos after the click.
