The long planned Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium expansion is one step closer with the announcement that UPS has provided an undisclosed amount towards construction. All the money is in, but rising construction costs have split the project into two phases and increased the original $62 million estimate up by roughly $20 million.

The project seeks to increase seating capacity to 63,000 seats, create additional luxury suites and premium loge seats, and provide a terrace on the south end-zone. Tom Jurich, Athletic Director at the University of Louisville hopes construction can begin immediately following the last home game this year and expects work to be done by the season opener against the University of Kentucky in 2010. Other sizeable contributions have recently been made by Papa John’s International, John & Annette Schnatter, and Sun Tan City. Architectural work is provided by Luckett & Farley.
