This is President Obama’s speech announcing his plans for American High Speed Rail (HSR) from April 2009. Will we see progress on rail in 2010? (h/t @HSRail, if video doesn’t load, click here)

  1. Is it me or has this idea been put on a back burner in the basement? I know a lot of other politically charged things are going on, but while I watch all of the highway repairs and airline security enhancements implemented, I have not even heard anything about preparing for rail. We need to make sure that whoever gets elected as Mayor of Louisville, that they push the heck out of rail and our connection to the Chicago hub if not others to ensure we are not forgotten.

  2. No, Patrick it’s not just you – “the back burner in the basement of the cow pasture shed on the back section” is more like it. I was stoked with this administration’s V.P. pick being an Amtrak commuter to Delaware – Joe Beiden. But this is the typical treatment, lots-o-huff and puff and then “fer-gedda-bout” it. Sounds to me like some other form of transit, the hot air trial balloon kind.

There is perhaps a novel and neglected approach toward restoring our Louisville-Indianapolis (thence Chicago) service. Drawing into consideration the current owners of that particular piece of rail trackage and what would it take to interest them in a putting on a once daily passenger run from Jeffersonville to Indianapolis. They have the goods to pull this off! We’d be abundantly foolish not to explore that avenue…..in depth.

This is no joke it could happen an we might just find ourselves with an unexpected commuter rail link. Forget trial runs, and endless studies go for the gusto instead, it’s faster and more likely to actually happen. Remember our last link to Chicago was initially from Jeffersonville Station.

  3. Any new news relating to HSR for Louisville that I may be unaware of? It would be an anwer to a prayer!
