Mopeds Swarm Louisville During Thunder Weekend

Mopeds in Germantown

The explosion of fireworks and the roar of airplanes wasn’t the only Thunder in town this weekend. Over 200 mopeds from across the country took to the streets in the Wisky Business 2 Rally put on by the Bourbon Bandits.

Several hundred mopeds were seen riding through the River City in various neighborhoods, and the above photo shows what must be over a hundred mopeds parked outside Germantown’s Nachbar. Quite a crowded sidewalk. There’s more info over at the C-J.

Another Thunder Over Louisville is history, and another Kentucky Derby Festival is just beginning. Here are some photos of the fireworks and the near-record crowds that packed Downtown Louisville over the weekend to take in the largest annual fireworks display in the country.

Arena Mayhem: Looking Inside The Belly Of An Arena

Construction entrance to the arena site

It’s been a while since we took a look at the arena construction site, but construction is hurrying on as quickly as ever. If (when, rather) you go to Thunder, be sure to check out the progress for yourself.

The scaffolding along River Road is particularly impressive. If you’re going to the Actors Theater viewing party, you’ll have some great views as well. If you’re not, then we’ve got the views just after the click. Concrete formwork to support the north end of the bowl is currently taking shape and jagged diagonal supports hint at the rows of seats that will eventually be installed.

    New Art-Bike-Racks Added To Downtown

We noticed two new works of art disguised as bike racks downtown today that are part of the ongoing bike rack program in Louisville.

We’re not sure how long they have been in place, but here are the photos. Apparently, another rack was installed at the Fleur-de-Lis on Main building back in February (C-J) that we completely missed. These bike-rack-sculptures are located near the intersection of Fourth and Main Streets. Anyone seen any other new bike racks around town?

Video: Building A Holographic World Simulation

This isn’t what we normally cover here, but the graphics in this video are pretty amazing, especially for the architecturally minded. In the award-winning short film called World Builder, a man builds a digital world in a sort of holographic simulation. There’s a wordless love-story behind the whole thing, too. The film was created by Branit|VFX and we saw it at Life Without Buildings.

Modern Shotgun House Could Be Future Prototype

A modern interpretation of a shotgun house is finishing up construction on Hull Street in Phoenix Hill. The project was designed and built by Shed Design+Build and will soon be home to one of the partners in the business. Graham Clark and John Bajandas recently completed the now fully occupied Franklin Flats in Butchertown with a similar modern interpretation of traditional massing. The modern shotgun house could eventually serve as a prototype for infilling vacant parcels in many of Louisville’s neighborhoods.
