Local Media and the Auto Industry

1

StreetsBlog pointed out an article by the Wall Street Journal analyzing advertising revenue of various media outlets. They break down revenue from the auto industry. As everyone knows, every other ad on television seems to be a car ad, and not surprisingly, local television ranks highest on the list. The chart appeared in the original WSJ article.

Here’s some info from StreetsBlog:

The amount of money pouring into the media from the auto industry is staggering. Analysts predict that spending on car ads will total $15 billion this year (the good news: it peaked at $24 billion in 2004). Declining or not, these ad dollars deliver an indispensable chunk of revenue across the media spectrum.

Maybe you’ve seen them traversing the busy weekend streets of Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue: Pedicabs, also known as bicycle rickshaws, are becoming a common sight in major cities across the globe. Among the North American hotspots for bike taxis are Portland, Oregon, New York, New York, and Denver, Colorado.

We told you last week about the biggest tent ever being constructed on the Belvedere for the Ryder Cup Gala. An elevated stage / tent floor has been built, massive air-handling equipment has been lifted in via crane, thousands of aluminum sticks have been arranged on the ground, and now the crane is back to lift the metal skeleton of the mega-tent into three dimensions!

Arena Mayhem: More Destruction

Arena Site Destruction Mayhem

Here’s an update of the latest destruction happening down by the Second Street Bridge. Of interest, the jungle gym power lines along 3rd Street should be coming down soon. Crews were torching the eastern side last week meaning the site of the future Galt House parking garage will be clear and ready for construction soon.

New Electrical Tower for Museum Plaza Taking Shape

Constructing the Other Museum Plaza Tower

The gigantic electrical tower at the foot of Eighth Street on the Museum Plaza site will still be standing for some time, but its replacement is already under construction farther to the west.

We already know about the massive trenches running down River Road, but now crews are working on a really large foundation for the new electrical tower with equipment that brought nostalgic memories of the glory days of Museum Plaza construction before the site was turned into a preserve for giant white monkeys and before those mini-earthquakes (and not money?) brought activity to a grinding halt.

The new electrical tower will be “more streamlined” than the old erector set standing now according to one crew member. In fact, the new tower will be simply one massive steel pole towering over Interstate 64. And don’t forget, the new tower will replace two existing towers including a smaller one standing in the entangled mess of the Ninth Street Interchange.

CPG will also build several five-story mixed use buildings closer to Jefferson Street bringing a much needed urban feel to the new East Village neighborhood.

If you tried to get into downtown Louisville by car early yesterday morning, you probably sensed a little extra traffic. The snarled roads were due mostly to preparations for a black-tie Ryder Cup event that still, what, two weeks out. On September 17, the red carpet will be rolled out (literally) on Main Street in front of the Kentucky Center where a couple thousand VIPs will attend the Ryder Cup Gala 2008.
